Outdoor & Footwear
Some are and some are not. A few makers still build boots in Canadian factories and workshops, while other Canadian brands design here and produce overseas. The label inside the boot and the product page are the best places to check. Look for Made in Canada wording, and do not assume a Canadian name means Canadian production.
Many can, especially boots with stitched construction. Some makers offer resoling or repairs themselves, and a local cobbler can often replace soles, heels or laces on well-built footwear. Ask about repair options before you buy. A boot that can be resoled may last several winters longer than one that cannot.
Ratings usually come from the brand itself, so treat them as an estimate rather than a guarantee. How warm you stay depends on fit, socks or layers, how active you are, wind and moisture. If you stand still outdoors for long periods, choose gear rated well beyond the temperatures you expect.
Ask who made them and which community they come from. Indigenous makers and Indigenous-owned shops usually share this openly. Be cautious with words like "inspired" or "style," which can describe items made by non-Indigenous companies. Buying directly from the artist or a shop that names its makers is the surest route.
For things you use often, like a winter coat, boots or a daypack, it can be. Well-made gear that can be repaired tends to cost less per use over time. If you only camp once a year, renting or buying secondhand may make more sense. Choose based on how often and how hard you will use it.
